You're probably reading this Vicks SpeedRead thermometer review because a baby is on the way, or because one is warm and fussy right now. The Vicks SpeedRead is the plain stick thermometer you've seen at every pharmacy: one button, a backlit screen, and a green, yellow or red glow that gives you a quick glance if their temperature is out of range.
It isn't fancy, so the real questions are whether you can trust the number, whether you can get it from a wriggling baby, and whether you can easily read it in any lighting condition.

Pros: what parents love
- The number is one you can trust. BabyGearLab got the most accurate, consistent readings of anything it tested, and TechGearLab measured it within 0.2°F of core temperature at every spot. Several parents call it the only thermometer in their drawer they believe.
- You can read it in a dark nursery. The backlit screen lights up with numbers much larger than most digital thermometers show, so you can check a sleeping kid without turning on the overhead light.
- The colors do the thinking for you. Green means no fever, yellow means slightly raised, red means fever.
- One button, nothing to set up. Press, place, wait. TechGearLab notes the tip is easy to clean, and it remembers your last reading so you can compare when you check again later.
- Fast enough for a sick toddler. Parents say it feels quick next to older thermometers that took a minute or two, which matters when you're holding down a kid who has opinions about this.
Cons: what parents don't
- The tip is hard. The rigid probe is less comfortable for rectal readings on a baby, but compared to other thermometers you don't see much of a difference.

Who it's for
Expecting parents stocking the baby kit or anyone in the market for a new baby thermometer. It suits anyone who wants accurate readings over gadgets: no app, no pairing, nothing to charge. If you'll mostly be taking rectal temps on a newborn and the firm tip worries you, the flexible-tip ComfortFlex is the sibling to compare.
How we reviewed
We rated the SpeedRead on accuracy and consistency, speed and ease of use, readability in a dark room, and comfort for a baby, especially rectally. We pulled together expert testing from BabyGearLab and TechGearLab, thousands of parent reviews across retailers, and Vicks's own packaging and manual.
A good thermometer is one of those things you buy once and forget about until the night it really matters. It's great to purchase one to have on hand even if you don't need it tonight.
